A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android

PEDAL TO THE PLASTIC.  A fan recreation of LEGO Racers built in a brand new engine, with restored shortcuts, online multiplayer, 4-player split screen, new tracks, mobile support, and more!

Restored 4 shortcuts cut from the original game!

Step on it tries to preserve the original feel of the game's UI, while making it run well on modern devices

4-player local multiplayer!

Restored cut content, such as Pirate Skull Pass's sunset.

I intentionally did not upscale or alter the original assets, as for me they have a specific charm. The updates come purely from rendering methods, et cetera!

New builder UI with new colors - still authentic to 90s lego

New versus mode, featuring 6-player multiplayer and new more difficult CPU drivers

New graphical options

Use your driver's license to share your car with others! The QR code stores your car's data

2 new tracks (still kind of a WIP), ported from an old Rocket Racers LEGO Arcade game from LEGOLAND Windsor - just for fun

Reversed tracks and increased difficulty modes

This remake was only made possible by isledecomp’s decompilation work and the contributors acknowledged in Credits; it is unaffiliated with the LEGO Group, and all rights to the original game, assets and trademarks remain with their respective owners.

Play instantly at steponit.online or download below.

  • Windows: Extract the ZIP and open Step On It.exe. Keep the extracted files together. If prompted, choose More info → Run anyway.
  • Mac: Choose Apple Silicon or Intel, unzip, and open Step On It.app. If blocked, use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
  • Linux: Extract the entire archive and run step-on-it, keeping the folder together. Use this launcher, not step-on-it-bin.
  • Steam Deck: Extract the Linux download in Desktop Mode. Add or (re-add) step-on-it as a non-Steam game, then launch in Gaming Mode. Leave forced Compatibility / Proton disabled and use Steam’s Gamepad controller layout.
  • Android (10+): Download and open the APK, allowing installation from your browser or file manager if prompted. Open the app while online and let the first game download finish. After that, you can play offline.

Game updates arrive automatically when you’re online. Multiplayer requires an internet connection.

I concur with the other person and say I love you for making this

I know it's not in your hands specifically, but do you know if there is any effort being made into a lego soccer mania decompilation? I feel like I'm one of 3 people that actually played this.

You can unbind pause from ESC for player 1 and then are unable to rebind it.

Good catch, will fix that

I just downloaded this. How do you extract the textures?

The best way to grab the original textures would be from the decompilation: https://github.com/isledecomp/racers/ - the files in this version are more structured for runtime

I love you. Build mode UI is weird. I can't put it into words, but picking bricks to place is bothersome. Either way, I love you, I was waiting eagerly for a proper remake like this.

Thanks! I'll keep working on the build system. Would you mind trying to describe more what makes it weird feeling for you? Are you using a mouse or joystick / touch?

Maybe it's just muscle memory, but the original system felt a bit more intuitive to navigate, especially with the keyboard controls. Yes, it could be clunky to find a specific part at times, but it was a lot quicker to cycle through all the parts for a given theme. The color filtering in this remake is neat, but also adds some additional "friction" to finding what you want. If there was a way to still cycle through every part with the arrow keys, that could be a nice feature. Just my 2 cents!

That does make sense! I will keep working on it.

Can you add release notes (and/or versioning) to this page? Very impressive work!

Can there be some UI scalling?
The multiplayer chat in lobby in particular is really hard for me to read on a 1080p monitor. Other than that the remake is REALLY good and i love it!

Sure! I'll do a pass soon with better scaling

Looks fun. Can't wait to try it, and for you to suffer with Step on It 2!

What if it's Extras! Like in Paperboy 64 stages and music from the game as EXTRAS! From Alphaville to Omega City

Great port, but multiplayer isn't working properly on the browser version, nobody can control their own characters, the CPU takes over.

Some bugfixes coming today!

My friends and I played several matches without issues, thanks for the updates. Very impressive work.

Thank you! I'm adding some more updates today to get the multiplayer even more stable... hopefully it helps the people that are having issues

This is amazing!

Just updated the build! If you're still getting "an update is available" in the bottom right corner just take a new copy from here, it should be resolved.
